Updated: Sep 4, 2023
Please Note: This announcement does not impact the SWG (Secure Web Gateway) Umbrella Chromebook Client.
Overview
Cisco is announcing significant changes to the Umbrella Chromebook DNS Client (v1.x) in response to the deprecation of Google's Manifest Version 2 (MV2) APIs. Google has recently taken off the End-of-Life (EOL) date of Dec-23 for their Manifest Version 2 APIs. As a result, Cisco is also removing the EOL date of Dec-31, 2023, for the Umbrella Chromebook DNS Client (v1.x). We will update the EOL date as soon as Google confirms the new EOL for their APIs. This change is in line with our commitment to aligning with Google's API support policies.
End-of-Life & End-of-Support Schedule
With the removal of the EOL date for Dec-31, 2023, the Umbrella Chromebook DNS Client (v1.x) will continue to be supported beyond that date. We will keep you informed of any future EOL updates once Google confirms their new EOL schedule.
Product Migration Options
The new Chromebook DNS Client, which will leverage DoH (DNS over HTTPS), is tentatively set for release around September 2023. This upgrade enhances security and performance, delivering an improved Chromebook experience. The new solution will be supported through DoH templates with identifiers, managed as an enterprise policy pushed from Google Admin Console.
Customers will receive a comprehensive migration guide at the time of release, covering all necessary information and step-by-step instructions for a seamless transition to the new DoH-based client.
For more details on DoH templates with identifiers, please refer to the official Chrome Enterprise policies documentation: Chrome Enterprise Policies - DnsOverHttpsTemplatesWithIdentifiers.
