Introduction
The Dynamic IP updater client will keep your network IP information updated in the Umbrella dashboard which will result in keeping your network protected. Whereas the Umbrella Roaming Client is a software that is installed on each device running Windows or Mac OSX to get Umbrella security and policy-based protection wherever you go.
Explanation
The ideal usage of the Dynamic IP updater client is to install it on a machine, preferably a desktop that is running 24/7 or is used daily on the network. This will ensure that when your IP address changes, it also updates your dashboard so that your network will be protected and the policies created will still apply.
On the other hand, the ideal usage of the Umbrella Roaming Client is to install it on laptops that "roam" or leave the network. This ensures that when those laptops do leave your network, they are still protected by the correct Umbrella security policies.
Installing both Clients on a Single Machine
At this point, you've probably thought "but what happens if I only have a single laptop and I need to install both clients?" Since both the clients do different things, you can certainly install them on a single machine.
The only thing that you will need to keep in mind for the Dynamic IP updater client is that when you switch to a different network without disabling the "updater", it will update the network on your dashboard to the current network you are on. To ensure that this doesn't happen, you will have to "disable" the updater client. For this reason, we typically do not recommend installing both the updater and the roaming client on the same computer if this computer will be leaving the network often.
