Similar to the networking concept of an air gap, Remote Browser Isolation creates a physical barrier between the end-user’s browser and a web page’s content. Isolated web requests are forwarded by Umbrella to a virtual browser instance that only lives for the duration of a session, creating a seamless and secure experience for the end-user where they can view and interact with a web page without the local browser rendering the content. Instead, the virtual browser renders the content on behalf of the local browser and securely relays the web page back to the local browser. Any malicious content would remain in the virtual browser instance, leaving the local browser unaffected and free from harm.
Documents hosted on a web page may also be viewed in isolation, but may be downloaded as a secure PDF, or in their original form. When documents are downloaded from a virtual browser, they are first subject to Umbrella file inspection before they are delivered to the end-user.
Remote Browser Isolation is an add-on to Umbrella SIG-based subscriptions, and is not currently available to Umbrella DNS-based subscriptions.
