What is happening?
On July 6th, Cisco Talos Intelligence will be updating the categories for Microsoft Outlook domains to include both Organizational Email and Web-based Email categories. Cisco Talos Intelligence handles categorization data for multiple Cisco products including Cisco Umbrella.
This change will affect the following domains and URLs:
- outlook.live.com
- outlook.live.com/owa
- outlook.office365.com
Why was this change done?
In order to keep pace with Microsoft's expanding Office 365-based infrastructure, categories applied to URLs and domains used on Microsoft Outlook's platform requires adjustment. Historically, the outlook.live.com/owa and outlook.office365.com URLs only had the Organizational Email applied but there has been an increase in traffic from Outlook personal accounts.
The category changes will assist customers in deciding which email platforms their users can access and enforcing the acceptable use policies.
What is the impact of this change?
This change may impact customers, who use Outlook in a browser and allow the Organizational Email category while also blocking the Web-based Email category. In this case, admins will need to add outlook.live.com and outlook.office365.com to an allow list. If customers block the Organizational Email category but allow the Web-based Email category, admins will need to make an exception to allow outlook.live.com.
